Borderlands Movie Review: Cate Blanchett Shines in Messy Video Game Adaptation
Borderlands Movie Review: Cate Blanchett Shines in Messy Video Game Adaptation
This review contains mild spoilers for the Borderlands movie.
Lionsgate's long-awaited adaptation of the popular "Borderlands" video game series finally hits theaters, but the result is a disappointing misfire that fails to capture the anarchic spirit and dark humor of its source material. Despite a star-studded cast led by the incomparable Cate Blanchett, director Eli Roth's PG-13 take on the notoriously violent and irreverent franchise feels neutered and confused about its target audience.
Plot: A Treasure Hunt Gone Awry
The film follows Lilith (Cate Blanchett), a legendary bounty hunter, as she reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora. Hired by the powerful Atlas Corporation to rescue a girl named Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), Lilith assembles a ragtag team including the soldier Roland (Kevin Hart), the hulking Krieg (Florian Munteanu), and the sarcastic robot Claptrap (voiced by Jack Black). Their mission evolves into a race to find a vault containing powerful alien technology, all while battling various factions and the harsh Pandoran landscape.
Blanchett: A Beacon in the Chaos
The undeniable highlight of "Borderlands" is Cate Blanchett's performance as Lilith. Despite the film's shortcomings, Blanchett fully commits to the role, bringing a perfect blend of world-weary cynicism and hidden vulnerability to the character. Her physical prowess in action scenes is impressive, and she manages to deliver even the clunkiest dialogue with conviction. In a movie that often feels adrift, Blanchett serves as an anchor, elevating every scene she's in.
Blanchett's Lilith is a masterclass in making an outlandish character feel grounded and relatable, even when the world around her descends into cartoonish chaos.
A Tonal Mismatch
Unfortunately, Blanchett's stellar work isn't enough to save "Borderlands" from its fundamental issues. Roth's direction feels caught between faithfulness to the source material and a desire to appeal to a broader audience. The result is a film that's too tame for hardcore fans of the games and too convoluted for newcomers.
The PG-13 rating severely hampers the movie's ability to recreate the games' over-the-top violence and crude humor. Action sequences lack impact, and many jokes fall flat due to apparent self-censorship. The film's attempts at world-building often devolve into clunky exposition dumps that even Blanchett can't fully salvage.
Visual Spectacle, But at What Cost?
While "Borderlands" boasts impressive production design and special effects, it fails to capture the unique cel-shaded aesthetic that made the games so visually distinctive. The result is a generic sci-fi look that could belong to any number of recent space adventures.
Supporting Cast: Hit and Miss
The supporting cast delivers mixed results. Kevin Hart feels miscast as Roland, struggling to find the right balance between comedy and drama. Jack Black's Claptrap provides occasional laughs but becomes grating over time. Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Tannis and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina have their moments but are ultimately underserved by the script.
Verdict: A Missed Opportunity
"Borderlands" had the potential to be a wild, irreverent sci-fi romp that could please both fans and newcomers alike. Instead, it's a mediocre action film that fails to capitalize on its strong source material and talented cast. While Cate Blanchett's performance as Lilith is a standout, it's not enough to elevate the film beyond its muddled execution and identity crisis.
2 Vault Hunter's Disappointment out of 7
Fans of the "Borderlands" games will likely be disappointed by this watered-down adaptation, while those unfamiliar with the franchise may find themselves lost in its convoluted plot. Despite Blanchett's best efforts, "Borderlands" is a reminder that not all video game adaptations can strike gold, even with A-list talent involved.
